Life for my family hasn’t always been easy. My parents are both from Mexico: my dad is from Guanajuato and my mom is from Michoacan. They both came to the U.S. for a better future and lifestyle. I am the eldest of four children, with three younger sisters that I love and care for. Coming from a Mexican family and being the oldest has made me into a very responsible and independent person. In the Mexican culture, the oldest sibling is responsible for the younger ones. Ever since my siblings were born, it has been my responsibility to look out for them. I am used to having people depend on me, rather than having to depend on others. It was my mom who taught me to be this responsible and independent person.
My mom stopped going to school after she finished sixth grade. Her parents took her out of school because they believed that girls should not be able to get a higher education. They thought this, because in Mexico the girls weren’t allow to get higher education, mainly because it costs so much. Their beliefs were that women are just supposed to stay at home to clean and cook. My mom has a different mindset for me: she wants me to go to college and graduate to become the women she wasn’t able to become.
Now, I am living my dream for my mom. She has given up so many things for me that I feel that I have the responsibility of making her proud, and accomplishing her life dream of becoming someone in this world. She has alway taught me to pursue my dreams and goals no matter what obstacles get in the way. The independence and responsibility she taught me will help me reach my goals. She is my biggest motivation in life. (307 words)

One contribution that I’m proud of is helping out my church with the children. The reason why I got involved with the children of my church was because I saw the need for a teacher. There was only one teacher at the time and she couldn’t make two lesson plans for the older and younger kids. I got out of my comfort zone and offered my assistance as a teacher. It was difficult for me, because I used to be a really shy person. I didn’t really talk a lot. At the time I didn’t know anything about teaching little kids, but I knew how to take care of them. I didn’t know how to come up with creative ways to teach them without boring them. I started to look online for creative way to teach young kids. I found out that children like to do a lot of engaging arts and crafts. I started to read them a Bible story for kids and then I would have an arts and craft project that related to the story.
I am proud of being one of the Sunday school teachers, because I can be an example for other kids. I really enjoy working with kids, helping them out, and coming up with creative ideas that teach them life lessons. I’m really proud of this accomplishment because it pushed me out of my comfort zone and I overcame my shyness. Ever since I started working with the kids from my church I have more confidence in myself. I talk more and I’m not as shy as I use to be. I learned that it’s not a bad thing to get out of your comfort zone. It might seem difficult at the time up but you can get a great experience from it like I did. (303 words)
